PhD: Richard Salkowe, Department of Geography, Environment, and Planning, University of South Florida. Richard is studying federal relief and community recovery of flood-affected rural counties in the US. Richard’s research will address questions pertaining to sufficient and equitable health-related recovery outcomes in rural communities that have differential access to federal resources that are available under the provisions of a Presidential disaster declaration, a declaration often politically motivated.
Master’s: Catherine Jampel, Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University. Catherine’s research project is entitled, “How bears become ‘problems’: Understanding human-bear-cattle relations in the northern Ecuadorian Andes”, investigating how Andean bears have come to be seen as “a problem” in rural communities in northern Ecuador, where the Andean bear is indigenous.
